Bosnia and Herzegovina Exporting Coal to Serbia in Mass Quantities

The biggest purchaser of coal from Bosnia and Herzegovina is Serbia, to which up to 80% of brown coal from BiH goes, whereas Croatia, Austria, France and Hungary are purchasers which purchase far lower quantities of this energy source from BiH.

The purchase of coal gained maximum speed in the second half of the year in Serbia. The data show that, from January 1 till June 30, 2022, Serbia bought 109,214 tons of brown coal at the price of 15.4 million convertible marks from BiH. In the same period the year before, Serbia bought 46,482 tons for 5.9 million convertible marks from BiH.

Following the explosion of the energy crisis, from July 1 till December 31, 2022, Serbia’s purchases amounted to 958,152 tons of coal, which means that 850,000 tons were bought in the second half of the year, so, eight times more.

The purchase trend continued in the first quarter of 2023, when 309,786 tons were exported for 52.8 million convertible marks.

According to the data of the Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina, brown coal is mostly exported to Serbia by the mines from Banovici, Foca, Ugljevik, Tuzla, Breza, Zvornik, Doboj, Zivinice, Visoko and the Brcko District.


Last year, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported six times more coal than the year before, and the trend of mass sale of this energy source started in the midst of the global energy crisis continued in the first three months of 2023.

According to the data of the Indirect Taxation Authority of Bosnia and Herzegovina, last year, the exports of brown coal amounted to as much as 958,152 tons, at the price of 144.3 million convertible marks, whereas, the year before, it was 160,840 tons for 19.2 million convertible marks.
