Sapic Discusses New Tunnel Beneath City Center, Two New Parking Garages and First Subway Line

The mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Sapic, announced on the radio show Magazin na Prvom on Radio Beograd big infrastructure projects in the capital of Serbia in the next five years. Sapic said that there would be efforts to complete some of the capital projects – the bypass route around Belgrade, the new Sava bridge with four lanes, a bicycle lane and tram tracks and the boring of a tunnel beneath the city center, from the Faculty of Economics to Despota Stefana Blvd, 2 kilometers long.

According to him, it will be one of the biggest projects in the past 20 years, because it will essentially change the appearance of the city. He claims that it will “clear traffic jams and reduce them by 14% and clean the air 12% and fully unload the city center”.

Talking about the bypass route, he said that “the bypass route around Belgrade will be completed by this spring and there are intensive efforts toward it”.

– The problem of parking in the capital city is a serious one – Sapic said and announced “the construction of two new public garages – in Vlajkoviceva Street and near the Pinki Hall, and the project of construction of private garages will be launched as well”.

As he said for RTS, “the final solution for everything is the subway”. He added that “when the works in Makis, where the first line is to start, get close to completion, which will be soon, we will say more about it”.
