The beginning of the construction of the Belgrade-Zrenjanin highway is expected on February 20, 2022, it was said following the meeting of the minister of construction, infrastructure and transport of Serbia, Tomislav Momirovic, with representatives of the City of Zrenjanin and the director of the PE Corridors of Serbia, Aleksandar Antic.

The planned highway section will be 105 km long, and 36 km of this highway is directly connected to Zrenjanin and the construction will take several years.

– We are working hard towards this, so that we could sign a commercial contract, bring the investor to the route and be able to expropriate the terrain, which will be turned into a highway in the future. I believe that we are getting to the very end of that process – minister Momirovic said following the meeting.

The plan envisages the construction of three interchanges, 21 overpasses, culverts which will enable connections with the existing traffic routes and connections with farm roads, so that agricultural production could continue unobstructed.

Ivan Pavlovic, the director of the Supervision Sector at the Corridors of Serbia, pointed out that the entire section was 105 kilometers long, of which nearly 100 kilometers are in the full highway profile, whereas the rest, around 5 kilometers in the Kac interchange zone near Novi Sad, is in the fast route profile. Frontal toll booths are planned at the beginning and the end of the route, and four rests with accompanying features, two parking lots and three road maintenance bases are also planned along the route. Six intersections with state roads are planned too, which will be solved with the construction of overpasses. Access routes to the interchanges in the city itself, Zrenjanin-Ecka and Zrenjanin-Zapad, were also discussed, so that the traffic would be moved outside the city to the highway in the most efficient manner, it is said on the city’s website.

There will be 51 km from the Ecka interchange to the Belgrade-Subotica highway, 44 km to the highway from Belgrade to Sid through the Fruska Gora corridor, from which there will be 21 km of a highway to Ruma.

– If we are looking at the Zrenjanin-Zapad interchange, which will be important for the citizens of Zrenjanin, the Ecka interchange will be important for the industry. You will be able to reach Sabac by a distance of 105 km, whereas, previously, Sabac and Zrenjanin seemed to be at the opposite ends of the world. That trip will be shortened to below an hour – said the director of the Corridors of Serbia, Aleksandar Antic, and added that this brought Zrenjanin closer to the entire Serbia in terms of infrastructure.

The mayor of Zrenjanin, Simo Salapura, emphasized after the meeting that the construction of this road would entirely change the image of Zrenjanin, as well as Banat, and that he believed that the region would become competitive to the economy and the investments, as well as the arrival of large investors, such as the Chinese company Linglong.

– 30% of that route will pass through the territory of the city of Zrenjanin, which will open entirely new development perspectives for the city. When you add the new industrial zone to it, Zrenjanin will no longer be the same. What’s most important for the people of Zrenjanin is that a large number of jobs will be created and that the salaries will increase considerably. What’s certain to happen is that a large number of people will either go back to Zrenjanin or move to the city. The investors will orient themselves to the new route, and we are talking a full-profile highway, which will look the way Belgrade-Nis, Belgrade-Novi Sad or Belgrade-Cacak highways look now. The people of Zrenjanin should keep in mind that, in a few years, they will be only 40 minutes away from the airport. Zrenjanin will practically be a city with an airport in its environment, which gives a whole new vision to the city and we can only glimpse its further development at the moment, but there’s no doubt that it will considerably improve its economic perspective – stated minister Momirovic, as reported on the website of the City of Zrenjanin.
